Renting Vs. Buying A Mobility Scooter: Which Is Better?

Posted by Marcelo Josebachvili on

When it comes to deciding whether you should rent or buy just about anything, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Renting almost always costs more over time, but if you only plan on using the device you’re renting for a month or two, it can often be very worthwhile. Buying, on the other hand, is best if you plan on using a device for a long time.

Mobility scooters are no exception to this rule—there are circumstances where rentals are best and other times when you’re better off buying. Let’s take a closer look at when you should rent or buy a mobility scooter:

Mobility Scooter: Should You Rent or Buy?

First, let’s tackle a common misconception: That rentals are lower quality than new scooters purchased outright. When renting a mobility scooter from a trusted provider like Re-New Mobility, your scooter is guaranteed to be in tip-top condition. Our rentals are extremely well cared for, and they’ll work just as well as if you’d purchased a new scooter.

With that out of the way, let’s look at circumstances where you should rent a mobility scooter and cases where you should buy one.

When You Should Rent a Mobility Scooter

You should consider renting a mobility scooter when you’ll only need one for a relatively short period of time. We have clients who choose to rent mobility scooters when:

  • They’ve suffered a temporary injury or impairment
  • They’ll be travelling for long distances temporarily (for example, on vacation or during the summer)
  • They have a mobility scooter or another mobility device that’s being repaired
  • They want to try a mobility scooter before they commit to buying one

Renting a mobility scooter is a good idea in all of these circumstances.

When You Should Buy a Mobility Scooter

Buying a mobility scooter is a good option if you know you’ll need your mobility scooter for a long period of time. Calculate the price of renting a mobility scooter per month, and multiply it by the amount of time you’ll need it for. Compare that to the price of purchasing a mobility scooter of the same quality outright. Generally, if you need a mobility scooter for more than 9 months, it’s usually best to buy one.

One advantage to purchasing a mobility scooter outright, even if you don’t need one permanently, is that you can sell the scooter once you’re done with it.

Not sure whether or not buying a mobility scooter is right for you? Talk to your doctor, your physiotherapist, and/or any other healthcare professional.
